Boar's Head has announced a recall for two of its widely distributed pecorino romano cheese products across the country, citing a potential contamination risk from Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
This recall specifically targets the grated pecorino romano cheese, available in 6-ounce containers, and the whole pecorino romano cheese, sold in 7-ounce packages. Consumers should check for products with sell-by dates spanning from November 2025 to May 2026. The affected cheeses were distributed to numerous grocery retailers, including Big Y and TOPS. To ensure safety, individuals who have purchased these items are advised to immediately dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
The recall was initiated after Boar's Head's supplier, Ambriola Company, detected the possible presence of Listeria. While no related illnesses have been reported to date, Listeria infection, or listeriosis, poses a significant health risk, particularly for older adults (65 and above), individuals with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and young children. Symptoms of foodborne illness, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea, warrant immediate medical attention if experienced after consuming the recalled cheese.
Maintaining vigilance in food safety is crucial for safeguarding public health. This recall serves as a timely reminder for consumers to remain informed about product alerts and to take proactive measures to prevent foodborne illnesses. By promptly acting on such advisories, we collectively contribute to a safer food supply chain and protect our communities from potential health hazards.
