Subaru Recalls Hybrid Forester and Crosstrek Due to Fuel Leak Risk

Subaru has initiated a significant safety recall for specific hybrid versions of its 2026 Crosstrek and 2025 Forester models, impacting a total of 71,207 vehicles. This urgent action addresses a critical design flaw involving the fuel cap's seal, which has the potential to allow gasoline to leak. Owners of these vehicles are being advised to take immediate precautions to mitigate any potential risks.

The core of the problem lies with a faulty seal on the fuel cap. When the fuel tank is nearly full and subjected to elevated ambient temperatures, pressure can build within the tank, causing fuel to egress through the filler neck and escape past the defective cap. This condition creates a fire hazard, a serious concern for vehicle owners and public safety. Subaru's investigation into the matter, prompted by a technical report from the U.S. market, confirmed the gasket's inadequacy. Although 33 incidents have been reported in the U.S., thankfully, no fires or injuries have been attributed to this issue so far.

As a temporary safety measure, Subaru recommends that owners of the affected Crosstrek and Forester hybrids park their vehicles outside and refrain from filling the fuel tank beyond the halfway mark. A permanent resolution involves replacing the existing faulty gasket with an upgraded version featuring an O-ring, which will be carried out at Subaru dealerships. While production of the 2025 Forester Hybrid has ceased, all new 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids will have the improved seal installed before delivery. Owners are expected to receive official recall notifications via mail by March 25, 2026.
